Idyros: the ancient city that makes Kemer quieter.
If you only see the beach, marina and mountains in Kemer, you are missing out on a beautiful second level: Right on the edge of Ayışığı Bay lies Idyros, an ancient settlement with mosaics, amphora tombs and the question of how old Kemer's history really is.
Idyros helps to see Kemer as more than just a backdrop. Between the modern city, bay and mountains lies an older layer that makes your stay quieter and more interesting.
Idyros is not a noisy day trip. It is a small historical trace in Kemer that makes the place deeper and more familiar for longer stays.

Where is Idyros?
The ancient city of Idyros is located in today's Kemer, near Ayışığı Bay. It is precisely this location that makes the place so interesting: the modern city is not far away, but almost part of the same story.
For guests this means: you don't have to leave Kemer to find a historical trace. Idyros is not a big day trip like Phaselis. It's off the mark, almost overlooked, and that's exactly where its appeal lies.
The mosaics: Kemer has older soil
Idyros became particularly famous for the remains of an early Christian church. Reports on the re-exposure of the mosaics describe finds that were discovered in 1976, later protected and made visible again decades later.
This is a nice change of perspective for Kemer as a holiday destination. Beneath today's rhythm of beaches, boats, cafés and apartments lies an older order: church, proximity to the harbor, trade, burial, everyday life.
Why the amphora graves are so exciting
In addition to the mosaic church, a necropolis with amphora graves is also mentioned. Amphorae are mostly known as transport vessels for wine, oil or other goods. When such vessels appear as a grave form, an everyday object becomes a reference to trade, movement and cultural connections.
You shouldn't make too much of a story out of it. But a good question remains: Was Idyros just a small waterfront town, or was it more integrated into maritime networks than Kemer suggests today?
A good Idyros moment
Idyros is best suited to a light day. Not as a program item that has to carry everything, but as a cultural break between the sea and returning to the house.
This is particularly nice if you are staying in Erendiz for a longer period of time. You don't have to look for a big goal every day. You can read Kemer in layers: garden in the morning, sea at noon, later a short walk to a place that reminds of the long history of this coast.
